Peter Ewers plays Live-Improvisation at the Eule-organ (III-46, 2017) of Neustädter Marienkirche, Bielefeld (Germany) to the tune of Martin Luther "Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich".

Finale symphonique sur « Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich »

The idea of the gothic Neustädter Marienkirche, also Bielefeld's biggest church, goes back to the times were 12 cleric members of a secular chapter formed a cultural, liturgical, fiscal community which gave stability to the middle-aged society. The earl of Ravensburg took the former parish church as burial place in 1293 and gifted the canons to pray for him until Judgement Day.

During reformation 1542 until it's abolition in 1810 the chapter of the Marienstift used the church simultaneously: Protestant and catholic canons established a secular but religious clima which took effect for people who were incorporated as citizens and faithful.

720 years later only the awe-inspiring building seems to tell about peoples hopes, harmony of lived moments and their fears. The beautiful rich reverberation, which is quite ideal case for symphonic improvisation, gives this former orientation of people back to the audience of today, quasi in it's aftermath and wants to touch someone's present-day request « Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich ».
