Er ist der erste Planet des Sonnensystems und der kleinste der terrestischen Planeten. Sein mittlerer Abstand zur Sonne beträgt 58 Millionen km. Seine Masse beträgt das 0,06fache der Erdmasse. Aufgrund der geringen Schwerkraft kann der Merkur keine Atmosphäre halten. Merkur ist nicht viel größer als der Atlantische Ozean an seiner breitesten Stelle. Die Oberflächentemperaturen schwanken zwischen +426 °C auf der Tagseite und -217 °C auf der Nachtseite. Ein Merkurtag hat eine Dauer von 176 Erdtagen.
Den Merkur von der Erde aus zu beobachten, ist aufgrund seiner Sonnennähe und der geringen Größe sehr schwierig. Daher zeigt er wie die Venus und unser Mond Phasen.
Bis zum Vorbeiflug der Sonde Mariner 10 in den Jahren 1974 und 1975 war nur wenig über die Oberfläche bekannt, bis heute sind nur 35 % seiner Oberfläche kartiert.
In der Mythologie ist Merkur der Bote der Götter, der mit seinen Flügelsandalen die Welt durcheilt.

Mercury is the first and smallest terrestrial planet of our solar system. Its mean distance from the sun is 58 million kilometers. Its size is only 6% that of the earth. As a consequence the gravitational force is not strong enough to retain an atmosphere. Mercury is not much larger than the Atlantic ocean at its broadest point. Surface temperatures range between +45°C on the day side and -217°C on the night side. A day on Mercury lasts 176 earth days.
Due to its nearness to the sun and its small size. it is very difficult to see Mercury from the earth. As a result, Mercury passes through phases similar to those of our moon.
Not much was known about Mercury’s surface until Mariner 10 flew by in 1974 and 1975. Until now, only 35% of its surface has been charted.
In mythology Mercury is the wingheeled messenger of the gods, who rushed tidings throughout the world.

La température en surface varie entre +426 °C sur la face diurne et -217 °C sur la face nocturne. La durée du jour mercurien est de 176 jours terrestres.
En raison de sa proximité avec le Soleil et de sa petite taille, l'observation de Mercure depuis la Terre est très difficile. Tout comme Vénus et notre Lune, elle présente des phases.
Avant le passage de la sonde Mariner 10 en 1974 et 1975, nous ne savions que très peu sur sa surface ; à l'heure actuelle, seuls 35% de celle-ci ont été cartographiés.
Dans la mythologie, Mercure est le messager des dieux, qui parcourt le monde, chaussé de ses sandales ailées.
