Der "rote Planet" hat als 4. Planet mit einem Abstand von 228 Millionen km zur Sonne und einem Durchmesser von 6.800 km nur das 0,53fache der Erdmasse. Die Temperaturen reichen von +24 °C bis -120 °C. Die bei uns sichtbare Helligkeit schwankt so stark, daß er gelegentlich nach der Venus, als zweithellster Stern am Himmel erscheint. Auf dem Mars toben heftige Sandstürme, die zum Teil die Hälfte des Planeten bedecken und mit ihrem eisenoxydhaltigen Staub für die rote Färbung sorgen. Seine Oberfläche ist geprägt von Kratern, Tälern und Flußbetten. Neben der Erde besitzt er als einziger Planet eisbedeckte Polkappen, die aus "trockenem" Kohlendioxyd und Wassereis bestehen. Die Atmosphäre setzt sich zu 95% aus Kohlendioxyd zusammen.
In der Mythologie ist Mars der Gott des Krieges, der zornig sein Haupt schüttelt.
Von Schlachtrufen unterbrochen, steigert sich in diesem Satz ein unruhiges Motiv, das durch die Schrecken des Krieges immer wieder jäh erstarrt, zu einem rauschhaften Tutti. Klangrausch statt Kriegsrausch!

The "red planet" is the 4th. in order. It is 228 million kilometers away from the Sun, with a diameter of 6,800 kilometers, and only 53% the size of the earth. Temperatures range between +24°C and -120°C. From our vantage point, its brightness sways in intensity, sometimes making it next to Venus the second brightest star in the sky. Tremendous sandstorms of iron oxide cover almost half the planet, leaving a red dust film over the planet. The surface is carved with craters, canyons, and canals. Besides the earth, it is the only planet with icy polar caps of “dry” carbondioxyd and water ice. Its atmosphere consists to 95% of carbondioxyd.
Mars is the mythological god of war, rearing his angry head.
Battle cries repeatedly interrupt the restless motive of this set, freezing in the horrors of war to finally crescendo in an intoxicating tutti. Sounds of frenzy, in place of sounds of war.

Distante de 228 millions de km du Soleil et mesurant 6.800 km de diamètre, la "planète rouge", la quatrième, n'a qu'une masse de 0,53 fois celle de la Terre. Les températures varient entre +24 °C et -120 °C. Vue de chez nous, sa luminosité est si variable qu'elle apparaît parfois dans le ciel comme l'astre le plus lumineux après Vénus. Les tempêtes font rage sur Mars ; elles s'étendent parfois sur la moitié de sa surface, et c'est leur poussière chargée d'oxyde de fer qui donne à la planète sa couleur rouge. Sa surface est creusée de cratères, de vallées et de lits de rivière. Avec la Terre, c'est la seule planète possédant des calottes glaciaires aux pôles, composées de dioxyde de carbone "sec" et d'eau gelée. L'atmosphère est composée à 95% de dioxyde de carbone.
Dans la mythologie, Mars est le dieu de la guerre, agitant furieusement la tête.
Dans ce mouvement, un motif anxieux, et sans cesse figé abruptement par les horreurs de la guerre, s'intensifie, entrecoupé de cris de guerre, jusqu'à un tutti enivré. Ivresse du son, pas de la guerre !
